Whirlpool fixes falling demand with its favorite appliance: the price increase
Whirlpool now expects a full-year 2026 GAAP loss of $4.95 a share, down from August's guidance of $2.25 to $2.75 a share in GAAP earnings. Its plan: a 7% price increase in North America and up to 10% in Latin America.

Why it matters: Whirlpool cut its 2026 outlook from a profit to a loss while leaning on price increases to rebuild margins, even as North America sales fell on soft demand.

Whirlpool ($WHR) has found the one dial on the machine it really trusts: price. In August, the appliance maker said its 2026 margins would be driven by its biggest price increase in more than a decade, and it guided to full-year GAAP earnings of $2.25 to $2.75 a share. On Oct. 26, it said it now expects a full-year GAAP loss of $4.95 a share, after its North America major-appliance net sales fell 8.2% excluding currency on soft industry demand.
The fix? More of the same. Whirlpool announced a 7% price increase in North America effective in the fourth quarter, and increases of up to 10% across Latin America.
"Same cycle as last time," said a Whirlpool dishwasher, speaking on condition of anonymity because it is a dishwasher. "Rinse, raise, repeat. They tell me this load comes out clean in 2027."
CEO Marc Bitzer was upbeat in August: “These decisive actions position our business for sustained performance improvement.” In October, he struck a slightly different note: “While the pace of recovery is slower than expected, these actions are setting a clear path for further improvements in 2027.”
Whirlpool also cited cost inflation on raw material, fuel and logistics, a rare case of suppliers raising prices on Whirlpool instead of the other way around.
CFO Roxanne Warner pointed to the balance sheet: “As a result, we now expect net debt below $4.5B at the end of 2026 and have preserved a clear debt maturity ladder until 2028.” Net debt, at least, is forecast to head the direction management wants.
Not everything is spinning out. Whirlpool said strong sell-out and order timing pushed U.S. October orders for its small appliances up about 40% year over year. The stand mixers, according to sources who are also stand mixers, have asked management to please not notice.
