Elon Musk says most of the 200-plus neoclouds face 'guppy-level death,' and his SpaceX competes with them

Musk says debt markets have nearly cut off AI cloud companies that lack other revenue. Nebius points to a new $3.5 billion Citi facility, and Nvidia's CEO says the capital gap will close.

Why it matters: Neocloud stocks already fell 30% or more in a month, per CNBC, and Musk says debt markets have nearly shut them out.

Elon Musk has a forecast for the AI cloud upstarts known as neoclouds, and it isn't a gentle one. "That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many," Musk wrote on X on Sunday, as quoted by CNBC. Neocloud stocks were trading lower early Monday, even after paring some of their losses, CNBC reported.

Musk's case rests on credit. "As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers," he wrote on X. He was replying to Social Capital founder Chamath Palihapitiya, who had posted that "Neoclouds are disorganized and poorly capitalized. Some are definitely better than others however." Palihapitiya, per CNBC, expects 2027 to "clear out a bunch of wrong/bad bets."

Consider the source

Musk isn't a neutral observer. SpaceX operates its own data centers and sells computing capacity, which makes it "a direct competitor to the neoclouds which also rent compute," CNBC noted. In the same post, Musk set SpaceX apart, pointing to its Starlink and launch revenue: "SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we’re investment grade and have Starlink ..." He didn't name any specific company.

When another X thread speculated that he was trying to drive neocloud stock prices down to buy them cheaply, Musk replied: "SpaceX is not buying any neoclouds. Pointless." Business Insider reported the exchange.

A rough month already

The group was already under pressure. CoreWeave and Nebius are down more than 30% over the past month and Iren has fallen 40%, according to CNBC. Business Insider's count is slightly different: about 37% for CoreWeave and 30% for Nebius. CNBC said the sell-off started after the spread on CoreWeave's five-year credit default swaps, the price of insuring its debt, hit levels generally viewed as a sign of distress, while its bond yields climbed.

The pushback

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has argued the problem is money, not demand. "What is missing in the middle is the working capital to fuel that growth… because there's just so much demand across so many sectors of AI, there's a scarcity of capital," he told CNBC, adding: "That's going to get solved."

Nebius ($NBIS) has tried to separate itself from CoreWeave. Chief revenue officer Marc Boroditsky told CNBC "we're not carrying the kind of debt that they are." On Oct. 22, the company announced a $3.5 billion senior secured facility provided by Citi, with a 364-day maturity and interest starting at Term SOFR plus 2.75% a year, rising to as much as 3.50%. Chief operating officer Ophir Nave said in the release that Nebius has other capital sources, including asset-backed financing "based on investment-grade customer commitments of more than $40 billion of long-term contracts."

CEO Arkady Volozh, per a StockTwits report, acknowledged some financing sources had dried up for now but said customer advances and other instruments "will probably provide us enough finance to build this gigawatt at least."

The coverage so far includes no response to Musk from CoreWeave or Iren. The number to watch isn't Monday's dip. It's whether the debt markets Musk describes reopen for anyone without an investment-grade rating.
