Coinbase pitches AI agents that trade crypto, stocks and derivatives for you

Coinbase is promoting a way to plug Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and other agents into your account. The service has been live since June; what's changed is the menu.

Coinbase ($COIN) wants your chatbot to have a brokerage account. In a post on X Thursday, the exchange pitched connecting AI agents including Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and Muse to Coinbase accounts, promising users can "Trade crypto, stocks, and derivatives on the Everything Exchange - all from a single conversation." Its developer account said a new Coinbase for Agents page shows how to hook one up.

This isn't a launch. Coinbase for Agents went live June 11 with crypto trading and derivatives, and a Sept. 22 update added U.S. stocks and ETFs plus controls to limit what an agent can touch or require approval for individual actions, TokenPost reported. On Oct. 19, Coinbase named five index perpetual futures markets agents can trade, which TokenPost listed as US500, Tech100, AI10, China10 and Defense10, available only in the U.S. Coinbase's developer docs list prediction markets as coming soon.

The pitch, per Coinbase's product page, is that an agent trades "your strategy within limits you set," with Coinbase enforcing those limits "in a separate portfolio for each agent." Coinbase's developer docs narrow that: isolated agent portfolios are for spot crypto only, and U.S. futures trade only in the user's default portfolio. Those are Coinbase's claims, not independently tested. The same page is blunt about the downside: "AI agents may fail," and you "assume full responsibility for your agent’s trades."

Coinbase shares closed down 4.51% at $169.09 as of Oct 22, 4:00 PM ET, before the post went up.
